Empowering Patients With Sickle Cell Disease: Expert Approaches to Navigation, Outreach, and Support
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of hematological disorders characterized by abnormal hemoglobin, leading to defective red blood cell morphology and function. It is characterized by many severe physical complications, including vaso-occlusive crises (VOC), hemolytic crises, chronic anemia, severe pain episodes, strokes, recurrent infections, priapism, and growth delay, among others. However, along with the physical consequences, SCD patients are at odds when it comes to the mental health challenges experienced, contributing to poor health outcomes. That is, in addition to the medical syndromes experienced by individuals with SCA, there is an interplay of psychosocial challenges, including mental disorders, pain crises, sleep disorders, interpersonal relationships, substance abuse, stigma, and workplace issues.
This course/webinar will discuss the psychological impact of SCD and brief different effective navigation strategies for SCD patients.
